SCENE 1
Maria takes notice of OSCAR’s newly-beautified TRASH CAN, decorated with flowers, a clean picket fence & a welcome mat. She rings the very calm-sounding doorbell, & a neatly-dressed OSCAR very politely answers. OSCAR then explains that he’s preparing for a visit from his brother ERNEST THE GROUCH. OSCAR holds a grudge against ERNEST for being the favorite kid in the family, so he plans to act nice & un-GROUCHY as a way of getting even with him.

ERNEST then begins to catch on, & decides to throw some niceness back at OSCAR. Maria & Luis, who watch nearby from the stoop, laugh at the thought of 2 GROUCHES acting nice to each other.
